Welcome to Taunton MA

Though many of the settlers of Taunton were not from Taunton England, they did come from many of the surrounding counties in the Southwest of England such as Devon, Dorset, Gloucester and Somerset. The old town of Taunton held great respect for many of the settlers, hence the name.

Cohannet

Originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Indians, the English found the area quite suitable for hunting, fishing and farming. A prime spot for settlement. Settlement began as early as 1626, however, it was not historically considered until 1637 when Gov. John Winthrop noted in his journal "This year a plantation was begun at Tecticutt by a gentlewomen, an ancient maid, one Mrs. Poole. She went later thither and endured much hardship and lost much cattle." We learn later that this "ancient maid" was younger than 50! Her brother William Poole was one of the original 46 purchasers of Taunton.

In 1675 a head of household was taken upon the start of King Philip's war. There were now 96 households in Taunton. In 1709 after much petitioning, meetings and discussions, a portion of land originally destined to enlarge Taunton to the north, was partitioned and became the town of Norton. Three years later, more of the same regarding a southerly portion of land was decided to be it's own town, Dighton. That was hardly the end of the divisions, as the years passed petions were made, maps drawn, countless meetings held until 1731, Raynham came to be.

Taunton continued to grow and prosper, businesses began to spring up among the countless farms and it became the county seat of Bristol, which it remains to this day.

Taunton is a beautiful, Old New England City. Rich in history and pride of her many thousands of descendants. Records were kept very efficiently back to it's very beginnings, making Taunton a delightful place to do research!
